Mate, or yerba mate, also known as the Jesuit's tea, is a traditional South American beverage. In Argentina and Brazil, it is enjoyed throughout the day “on the go” in a calabash gourd. Mate is an energy drink, containing quite a lot of caffeine just like coffee, stimulates the nervous system, is rich in vitamins and good for the heart. It is often used as the basic ingredient in herbal weight-loss preparations or when fasting because it reduces appetite.
