Rooibos the African tea

Rooibos is a shrub that grows only in South Africa. It has needle-like bright green leaves and small yellow flowers in Spring.

Rooibos is also called Red bush due to its characteristic colour that comes from the oxidizing process.
Naturally caffeine-free, Rooibos tea is soothing and has a distinct slightly sweet taste.

After harvest, the leaves and stems are cut up into small pieces, stacked, spayed with water in order to begin the fermentation process which changes their colour from green to copper-red and left to dry in the sun. Finally, they are sieved and lightly steamed.
Just like black tea, Rooibos tea can be enjoyed plain or with milk and is prepared in the same way, paying attention to water quality and temperature, dosage and brewing time.

  • Use freshly filtered water or bottled water with a low mineral content
  • Heat water to 90οC. Measure out 1tsp leaves for 200ml water
  • Pour hot water over the leaves and seep for 5 to 10 minutes depending on how strong a brew you prefer.

Local populations have been enjoying the health benefits of Rooibos tea for centuries. Rich in antioxidants, Rooibos also helps treat digestive problems and allergies and is definitely the best relaxing evening tea to prepare for a good night’s sleep.
