Mate, or yerba mate, is also known as the Jesuit's tea, is a traditional South American beverage. In Argentina and Brazil, it is enjoyed throughout the day “on the go” in a calabash gourd. Mate is a stimulating drink, containing quite a lot of caffeine just like coffee, and many vitamins. It is a nervous system stimulant and is good for the heart. It is often used as the basic ingredient in herbal weight-loss preparations or when fasting because it reduces appetite. This particular blend comes from small organic farms in Brazil. The leaves and stems are more coarsely cut than our conventional mate and yield a mellow, slightly sweet taste to the brew with notes of tobacco and dried grass.
