Mate, or yerba mate, is also known as the Jesuit's tea, is a traditional South American beverage. In Argentina and Brazil, it is enjoyed throughout the day “on the go” in a calabash gourd. Mate is a stimulating drink, containing quite a lot of caffeine just like coffee, and many vitamins. It is a nervous system stimulant and is good for the heart. It is often used as the basic ingredient in herbal weight-loss preparations or when fasting because it reduces appetite. Traditional mate has the particularity of also containing stems, resulting in a milder tasting infusion.
