Make your own Iced Tea

If you want to make your own iced tea (and it is really very easy!), we can give you some of the best recipes.
Although any tea can be enjoyed iced, The Tea Route has selected a series of aromatic teas whose flavour responds best to chilling.

There are two ways of making iced tea, and in both cases you can either drink it at once or keep it in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Iced tea can be sweetened with honey or sugar, or you can add some fruit juice for a stronger flavour. The Tea Route can also suggest other cool summer drinks, including iced tea "frappe", with milk, for a reliable and truly memorable source of refreshment, all summer long.

Hot water method

• Put 5 teaspoons of tea in 250 ml hot water and let steep for 4-5 minutes for black tea, 2-3 minutes for green tea, or 8-10 minutes for herbal and fruit teas.
• Add 2-4 tablespoons of sugar (optional).
• Pour this brew into a 1-litre pitcher filled with ice cubes, and add 2-3 slices of lemon.

Cold water method

• Fill a 1-litre jug with room-temperature water.
• Put 5 rounded teaspoons of tealeaves into a paper filter.
• Submerge the filter in the water and let steep 30 minutes for green tea, 45 minutes for black tea and 60 minutes for herbal and fruit teas.
• Remove the filter, top up with ice cubes and serve. Can be kept for 1-2 days in the refrigerator.

The Tea Route Iced Tea

Here is a recipe for a special iced tea with fruit juice and herbs. It can be used in many different ways, including for punches and cocktails.

5 teaspoons Chado tea
1 ½ tablespoons honey
½ orange, quartered
½ lemon, quartered
½ lime, quartered
2 sprigs fresh mint

• Steep the tea in ½ litre hot water, with the honey, for 4 minutes, then strain.
• Place the fruit and mint in a 1-litre jug, lightly pressing the lime and orange to express some of the juice.
• Add the prepared tea, fill with ice cubes and serve.

Iced milky tea

For "frappe" fans, here is a healthier substitute made with powdered green Japanese tea (Matcha).

1 teaspoon matcha
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup hot water
3/4 cup cold milk

• Stir the matcha and the sugar together. Add the hot water. Shake until frothy.
• Add the cold milk, stir, and fill with ice cubes.
• Serve at once.
